What's New at CED
June / July 2008
- The CED was awarded a three year grant, the West Virginia State Implementation Grant (WV SIG). The grant will provide $300,000 per year for three years to build a family-centered, culturally competent and community based system of care for children and youth with special health care needs that is supported and sustained through health information technologies.
The grant is a collaborative effort among the CED, WVU Department of Pediatrics, WV Primary Care Network, WVU Mountain Doctor Television (MDTV) with the WV Children with Special Health Care Needs Program (WV CSHCN).
WV SIG will develop a model of integrated services supported by health information technologies creating a virtual medical home. Telehealth clinics will provide a framework for community based partnerships and will improve access to specialty care. Using MDTV, specialty clinics will be available in the most rural, isolated parts of West Virginia. For more information, contact Maggie Jaynes, MD at 304-293-4692 or e-mail her at mjaynes@hsc.wvu.edu. - The CED launched its newly redesigned web site. The new site is designed to be a resource for disability information in addition to CED program information. The site is also a way to demonstrate that accessible web sites can be user friendly and visually appealing while integrating new technology. The site will continue to expand program pages and disability information in the upcoming months.
- The CED awarded a Certificate in Disability Studies to twelve graduate and undergraduate students for the 2007/2008 academic year. The certificate, recognized by the University and available for students from a variety of disciplines, is awarded based on completion of WVU coursework and a successful capstone that emphasizes the student’s own field and the field of disabilities.
The CED and the WVU Department of Special Education collaborated on the certificate program, which provides graduates with specialized knowledge and skills that can make them more competitive in the job market and in applying for graduate school. For more information, contact Mary Ellen Zeppuhar, EdD at 304-293-4692 x 1108 or e-mail her at mzeppuhar@hsc.wvu.edu. - The CED exhibited at the AmeriCorps Disability Day sponsored by the WV Commission for National & Community Service during an Appalachian Power Park ballgame on June 26, 2008.
