Assistive Technology & Employment
Assistive technology (AT) can enable people who have a disability, or have difficulty using standard equipment, to obtain employment, keep working or regain employment. AT used for employment can range from alternative keyboards to height adjustable workstations and communication devices.
Examples of AT at work:
- Barrier: A cashier with a cognitive impairment has difficulty making change.
- Solution: The worker uses a talking calculator and a chart of bills and coins.
- Cost: $150
- Barrier: A greenhouse worker with a brain injury has difficulty correctly mixing various chemicals.
- Solution: Measuring cups, a checklist, and the chemicals are color-coded so the person can accomplish tasks by matching colors.
- Cost: $25
