The mission of the Country Roads Program is to prepare and empower students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to acquire knowledge and skills that will help them reach their maximum potential. Each year affords new opportunities for students to demonstrate knowledge and skills they learn through the program in the following areas:

  1. Independent living,
  2. Social engagement, and
  3. Career education and training
  4. Self Advocacy and Leadership

Each program area is designed to meet the following program goals:

  1. Students will be able to live independently,
  2. Students will be engaged in social opportunities including the classroom, and
  3. Students are competitive for hire and sustain employment in a chosen area.

The Country Roads Program, is an inclusive post-secondary education program designed for individuals with a diagnosed intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) who are 18-26 years of age and have completed a high school or equivalent degree and would not be able to apply and attend West Virginia University through traditional measures.

Students complete two years of programming in both fall and spring semesters to achieve a 60 credit hour WVU certificate and a transcript of all of the student’s coursework. If the student is interested and able, they may have credits able to transfer achieved in the second year of their program enrollment.

Students who complete the program graduate with a plan in place to continue on after graduation and obtain employment or continue on to further education and training with supports identified in final student centered planning sessions.
