July is Disability Pride Month
This year's theme is "The World Works Better With Us."
Monday, July 6, 2026
Each July we celebrate Disability Pride Month to share joy and uplift people with disabilities and the disability community. This month-long celebration is centered around National Disability Independence Day on July 26, also known for being the anniversary of the passing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Why is the ADA important? It is a civil rights law passed in 1990 that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in many different ways, including employment and housing.
Why is Disability Pride important? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1 in 4 U.S. adults have a disability. Ableism, or discrimination against people with disabilities, unfortunately still exists and has negative effects. It is important to educate ourselves and include and value people with disabilities in our everyday lives.
At the WVU CED, we provide services and conduct research that supports the independence and dignity of people with disabilities.
