- West Virginia AgrAbility grant was refunded for four years. The project is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded program established to help people with disabilities remain active in agriculture. The project partners with West Virginia University Cooperative Extension, Safety and Health Extension, the Northern West Virginia Center for Independent Living (NWVCIL). - Barbara Blumish presented “Positive Behavior Support” at the 2009 Celebrating Connections on February 25, 2009 at the Charleston Civic Center. Participants learned how to use an evidence-based approach for addressing challenging behaviors in school and home environments, how to conduct a functional assessment and how to develop positive behavior support plans. - Jamie Hayhurst Marshall presented “Universal Design for Learning: Ensuring All Students are Engaged,” at the 2009 Celebrating Connections on February 26, 2009 at the Charleston Civic Center. - Scott Davis, PhD and Terry Cunningham presented “Person Centered Planning,” at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg on March 17th and Terry and Amanda Gum presented the same training on March 31, 2009 for other staff at the VA Center. Amanda and Lori Risk also presented “Intro to TBI” at the Vet Center in Morgantown on April 3, 2009.
- Regina Mayolo, presented a Fair Housing presentation for the Jefferson County NAACP on March 10, 2009 in Charles Town, West Virginia. Regina will also be presenting a Fair Housing Workshop for the Wheeling Housing Authority on March 25, 2009. The presentation will provide an overview of Fair Housing and Section 504 regulations.
- The Fourth Edition of the Farmers Connection Guide is now available. This guide is a resource for farmers and farm families in West Virginia; it contains contact information about both state and national resources related to agriculture. - Pat Nisbet and Ron Somerville presented “The Specialized Family Care Program, An Alternative to Institutionalization,” at the 2009 Timely Permanency for Children Adoption Conference sponsored by WVDHHR on March 18, 2009 at the Water Front Hotel in Morgantown.
- The CED would like to welcome new staff members:
- Daria Jones is the Disability Employment Program Specialist for Gateways (Medicaid Infrastructure Grant project). Daria is an educator and rehabilitation consultant. Her work experience includes being the executive director of a psychosocial rehabilitation agency specializing in supported employment services in Pennsylvania. She also worked as a program coordinator for the ARC of Harrison County. Daria’s office is in room 225 at the CED in Morgantown, to reach her call 304-293-4692 x 1162 or e-mail her at djones2@hsc.wvu.edu.
- Ashley Watts is the new Assistive Technology Specialist for the Higher Education Access Project. Ashley has an associates degree in art from Potomac State College, two B.S. degrees: one in agricultural and environmental education and a second one in animal and veterinary science from West Virginia University. Her M.S. from WVU is in agricultural and extension education specializing in data analysis, research methods and special education. Ashley's thesis focused on the perceptions of agricultural educators on including students with exceptionalities in their classrooms. Ashley was a teaching assistant at WVU and is a state certified teacher. She has worked as a teacher, a mentor for reading and writing skills for Americorps, Energy Express Mentor and researched data and planned national events for the dean of the WVU College of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences.
