- The Work Incentives, Planning, and Assistant (WIPA) Program was awarded continuation funding through March 2010. This extends the total length of the program at the CED to ten years. The grant is awarded by the Social Security Administration in partnership with WV Division of Rehabilitation Services. The WIPA project seeks to help beneficiaries receiving Social Security Disability benefits understand how earned income would affect their current cash and medical benefits. - Green Thumbs, Healthy Joints provides gardening groups an opportunity to perform community service by making gardening accessible to West Virginians with arthritis. The program provides gardening groups with financial support to help cover material costs for construction of raised beds and/or other accessibility modifications for gardens. Green Thumbs received additional funding this year, so requests for proposals went out to senior centers, VA hospitals, and various gardening groups/clubs statewide as well as to Master Gardener groups.
The 20 mini grant recipients receive ergonomic tools, which they can later use in outreach and educational efforts. Gardening projects will be funded and completed in the following counties: Berkeley, Braxton, Cabell, Fayette, Gilmer, Harrison (3 projects), Nicholas, Marion, Ohio, Preston (2 projects), Putnam, Raleigh, Roane, and Webster (2 projects).
The program is very pleased to have its first accessible gardening project at a VA hospital. In Berkeley County, the VAMC Martinsburg will construct raised garden beds in the outside recreation therapy area of the Community Living Center. Additional raised garden beds will be constructed in other areas of the VAMC Martinsburg to assist other resident populations housed in different buildings on the grounds.
