- The CED was awarded several new grants starting October 1, 2008:
- "The West Virginia LEND Autism Expansion Project (WV LEND/AEP)." The WV LEND/AEP will advance the knowledge and skills of pediatric providers to improve the screening and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and to promote evidence-based treatment of these children in a primarily rural setting. It will promote innovative use of telehealth to improve screening, diagnosis and access to care for children with ASD and their families in rural, remote and underserved areas. - The "Higher Education Access: A Universal Design Demonstration" project will provide professional development, technical assistance and accessibility advice to faculty and administration at West Virginia University and its two satellite campuses Potomac State College and WVU Tech. - Taking Charge - Activating Senior Networks in Rural Appalachia has received funding for the 2008-2009 fiscal year from the US Department of Agriculture. This program will collaborate with social and allied health networks in 17 rural Appalachian counties to educate and empower West Virginia seniors to self-manage chronic conditions, improve healthy lifestyles and enhance their independence. In addition, home assessments and assistive technology will assist seniors in making informed choices about remaining independently in their homes. - Green Thumbs was awarded another year of funding from the Osteoporosis & Arthritis Prevention and Education Program, WV DHHR Bureau for Public Health. This program will continue to conduct outreach to raise awareness about the wide variety of ergonomic tools and gardening accessibility options available to persons with musculoskeletal conditions.
The Green Thumbs program will provide accessible gardening grants that support gardening applicant groups to purchase materials to construct raised beds or otherwise modify gardens for greater accessibility. Such gardens may be at senior centers, public libraries, or other such community settings where seniors and those with arthritis can be actively engaged in the construction and maintenance. - Scott Davis, TBI Coordinator, provided "Introduction to TBI, PBS and Emotional Issues," to in home care providers at the Coordinating Council for Independent Living at the Days Inn in Elkins, West Virginia on September 15, 2008.
- WVATS provided an "Access to the Computer" session for attendees at the 2008 People First Conference held at Jacksons Mill September 4-6, 2008. On September 8, 2008 WVATS provided augmentative communication training to teachers in Tyler County on the SpringBoard. WVATS also hosted a vender demonstration by Flagship Mobility on September 10, 2008. The demonstration showcased new equipment including lifters and an emergency evacuation system. WVATS also offered assistive technology demonstrations and device showcases during the "Day of Accessible Recreation" held at Adventure Pursuit on September 12, 2008. On September 30, 2008 WVATS provided a training for Marion County teachers on Kurzweil 3000, Dragon Naturally Speaking and the Microsoft accessibility features.
- WVATS in partnership with PATHS, Inc. presented "Assistive Technology in the Workplace" at the WorkForce WV office in Parkersburg on October 6, 2008. This training included disability awareness, assistive technology and job site accommodation information. WVATS presented "Assistive Technology and RTI" at the WV CEC Annual Conference in Logan WV on October 8th. This presentation was designed to help educators incorporate assistive technology into the classroom and to help ensure teachers are including aspects of RTI (Responsiveness to Intervention) in their educational settings. WIPA and WVATS will also be participating in the Berkeley County Transition Summit on October 16, 2008. - The Fine Arts program participated in the Different Voices, Common Experiences art show at the Monongalia Arts Center in Morgantown on September 5, 2008 and the Taking Part Art Show held in conjunction with the Office of Disability Services at WVU on October 14, 2008.
- WV AgrAbility is sponsoring a workshop presented by the American Chronic Pain Association on Pain Management. The workshop, "Growing Well with Pain" will be on October 16, 2008 from 1:00-3:00 at the Bridgeport Conference Center in Bridgeport, West Virginia. - The CED welcomes new staff:
Karen Gerard, is a new Benefits Counselor for the Youth Transition Demonstration (YTD) Project. Karen obtained a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from WVU and has five years of experience working with children, families and people with disabilities. Most recently Karen worked at Human Resource Development Foundation and has already worked with the YTD Project as a Customized Employment Specialist. She assisted youth with disabilities reach their employment and independent living goals. Karen has also worked at the Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services as a vocational specialist and at Way Station, a day habilitation program for people with psychiatric disabilities in Maryland. Valerie Utt is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor who will be serving consumers in the Northern and Eastern panhandles. Valerie recently completed the Rehabilitation Counseling program with a master’s degree in May 2008 from West Virginia University and has a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in art at Fairmont State University in 2005. She has been fortunate enough to use her education and give back to her community through various volunteering opportunities with organizations such as the Rape and Domestic Violence Information Center and the V.A. Karen Duckworth is a new Parent Network Specialist (PNS). Karen comes to us with a background in early education, knowledge of the Birth to Three program, and ties to the State Department of Education. Like all of our PNS, she is the mother/caregiver of a child with developmental disabilities. Karen will be working in Charleston out of the Diamond Building.
