Waivers
The West Virginia Medicaid waiver program allows people with disabilities the freedom to remain in their own homes with family and receive specialized care. These programs help reduce costs, increase coverage and improve care for individuals with disabilities who might otherwise be institutionalized or forced into a nursing home or hospital situation.
The WVU CED Family to Family (F2F) program held a West Virginia Waivers and Related Services webinar in December 2023 to share information about the various waiver programs available to Medicaid members in the state. View the video and accompanying resources below:

Aged and Disabled
A long-term care option that provides in-home care and community help. It allows a person to remain at or return home instead of receiving nursing home or institutional care. Services in the program promote choice, self-reliance, respect and community care. To start the application process, a medical professional must complete the Medical Necessity Evaluation Request (MNER) form and follow the directions on the form to submit.

Children with Serious Emotional Disorders
Provides additional Medicaid support to children from ages 3-21 with serious mental, behavioral or emotional health needs. The program helps keep children with their families at home or in the community instead of going to a facility or group home. Services are based on the National Wraparound Initiative model that helps the child and family get the skills they need to deal with challenges and keep the child stable at home. The application process begins by calling the WV Crisis and Referral line at 844-435-7498.

Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities
Provides services that help to teach, train, support, guide and assist children and adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. To start the application process, complete the application form and follow the directions on the form to submit.

Substance Use Disorder
Offers multiple services for Medicaid recipients to help with substance use disorders. Services include adult residential treatment, peer recovery support services, withdrawal management services and more. For more information, call 304-558-1700.

Traumatic Brain Injury
Provides support at home for Medicaid members three years and older with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Some rules are waived to allow West Virginians with a TBI to receive support to live at home. The program promotes choice, independence, respect, dignity and involvement in the community. To start the application process, a medical professional must complete the Medical Necessity Evaluation Request (MNER) form and follow the directions on the form to submit.
